Coronavirus: Which mask is recommended and what is its correct use?

According to the National Public Health Organization, respiratory viruses like the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, can be transmitted through droplets that come out of our mouths when we speak, cough or sneeze.

Using a mask blocks the droplets from being transmitted and is therefore a key measure to limit the spread of the virus in the community.

Non-surgical masks are usually made of cloth and are recommended to the general public.

The correct use of the mask is the key for its effectiveness and its protection of those who wear it.

  • Clean your hands by washing them with soap or applying an alcohol-based antiseptic just before you put on your mask and before you take it off.
  • Place the mask over your nose, mouth and chin, and ensure that there are no gaps between the mask and your face. If your mask has a metal strip, press it gently around your nose. DO NOT touch the mask while you wear it, as you can transmit the virus to your fingers.
  • To remove your mask, pull the bands off, first touching them from the bottom and then the top. If the bands are elastic, take both elastic bands at the same time.
  • Do not touch the front surface of the mask! It is considered to be infected!
  • You should remove and dispose of your mask if it is wet.
  • Throw away your mask by holding only the elastic bands or cords.
  • If your mask is multi-use, wash it as soon as possible after each use with a normal detergent at a temperature of 60οC.

At the same time, you should be keeping to social distancing measures, washing your hands frequently and avoiding crowds.
