Ozempic Face: What It Is and How We Can Deal With It

In recent years, Ozempic has gained popularity as a medication for managing type 2 diabetes and for weight loss. Its active ingredient, semaglutide, helps to reduce appetite, thereby contributing to weight loss. However, with rapid weight loss, one of the unwanted aesthetic effects that can appear is the so-called "Ozempic face."

Ozempic face describes the change observed in the face due to quick weight loss. Facial fat is reduced, leaving the skin loose and wrinkled, giving an aged appearance. The face loses its firmness and volume, resulting in more visible fine lines and wrinkles.

Dermatologist Christiana Iosifidi explains: “Any sudden, significant weight loss makes us look older. The active ingredient in Ozempic does not directly affect the skin or fat of the face and body, but the substantial weight loss in a short period leads to sagging and premature aging. Fortunately, there are advanced aesthetic medicine treatments that can counter this effect and restore youthfulness to the face. Fillers are one of the most popular options as they replenish lost facial volume and help smooth out wrinkles. The results are immediate, and the face appears fuller and more youthful. The new Profhilo Structura restores lost volume and facial contour. Using a cannula, Profhilo Structura is injected into the face, stimulating collagen and elastin production, providing a lifting effect. Profhilo Structura rebuilds the fatty tissue located under the skin and above the facial muscles, noticeably improving sagging and correcting facial contours.”

Dermatologist Antonis Seretis adds: “The technology of modern lasers today helps us achieve impressive results in facial firming. Depending on the level of sagging, we design a plan with different technologies that we believe will yield the best outcome. Frequent visits are not necessary—usually once a month—while the main advantage is that there’s an immediate return to activities. When a protocol is properly designed, the results can be comparable to a mini facelift. It’s worth noting that treatments should be tailor-made to achieve the best result. Additionally, the use of absorbable threads helps lift the skin and improve facial contour.”

Head and Neck Surgeon, ENT, MD. Georgios Roukis suggests the “Liquid Facelift” to restore lost facial volume after extended use of Ozempic, as well as in any significant weight loss.

“By gradually and as needed applying adequate amounts of hyaluronic acid in areas with substantial facial fat loss, we gradually restore a healthier and more refreshed facial appearance. At the same time, using hyaluronic acid fillers in areas like the cheekbones adds volume and corrects the appearance of a hollow face. It’s important to emphasize that hyaluronic acid is naturally present in our body and is a safe and predictable material when used appropriately.”

Today, thanks to advances in aesthetic medicine and plastic surgery, we can address Ozempic face quickly, affordably, and most importantly, safely, offering the face freshness and a youthful glow.
