Intermittent fasting: the latest in weight loss
Intermittent fasting is a major trend in the world of dieters as well as the scientific research community. The reason why scientists are interested is that intermittent fasting has been shown to improve many markers of longevity and metabolic health. This is a promising diet that can be considered a breakthrough diet, as it includes some hours of fasting within a 24-hour period where you can only consume water, sugar-free beverages and coffee, and nothing else. The number of fasting hours can be anything from 12 to 23 hours during the day.
According to a review in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2007, researchers concluded that this type of diet can improve the cognitive function of an individual, reduce the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer, and protect against certain symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.
From the few studies that have been carried out in humans, it appears that this process can significantly reduce body fat, even after only 8-weeks of following it. At the same time, it seems that through this process, one can improve their insulin sensitivity, including healthy people with normal body weight. Improving regulation of insulin and blood sugar is an effective way to reduce the feeling of hypoglycemia and the tendency for uncontrolled snacking.
All of these changes were also observed by journalist Dr.Mosley, who recently published his book, The Fast Diet, in London, where he describes his personal experience with intermittent fasting. Moreover, alcohol can be included in this diet as it does not seem to prevent weight loss, as long as it does not contain sugars. So if anyone wants to apply this method, the best way is to ask for guidance from a specialist.
